Those Three Kings

The Epiphany (Jan 6, the day the three kings supposedly came to baby Jesus) is celebrated like this in Wisconsin: kids go to school, people go to work, and if you’re a strict Catholic you might attend service in the evening.  My parents never made me go, unless it fell on a Sunday anyway. No big deal.

Puerto Rico? It’s a national holiday. On January 5th my hubby went to the bank at 2pm and…closed at noon! Toys R Us was PACKED!  Oh.  Fireworks were shot around our neighborhood that night.

Speaking of night…apparently the Puerto Rico kids put out grass for the three king’s camels, and even treats for the Kings themselves! Because I guess you tell the kids that the Kings come to your house with gifts the night of the 5th.  In fact, my neighbor grew up in he country and said Santa never came to her house, she didn’t get gifts until the three kings brought some on January 6th. I guess Santa was more of a city thing. Now maybe all those men go to everyone’s house? I’m not sure how they explain to the kids how the Magi’s magically get to everyone’s house. I have a hard enough time warding off detailed questions about Santa. I can’t imagine weaseling my way of explaining a whole other story!

It’s 5:30am on the 6th and we have all our doors and windows open because the weather is mah-valous dahling and what happens? Some ASSHOLE starts blaring music outside our neighborhood. Sounds like one of those trucks with the mega speakers driving back and forth. Ugh! What a jerk! I am incredibly irritated and start sending hate vibes to that person and wonder if anyone is going to call the cops.  The music persisted until around 6:30am.

And no, no one called the cops. It was a parade put on by the MAYOR! Apparently I missed this last year. A parade. Pre dawn. Three dudes dressed up as the Kings sit in a truck that goes around waking up the kids in the city to come outside and find their gifts. (There’s a Jehova Witness church right outside our neighborhood. I bet they love this very intruding tradition). I’ve heard that this is a very exciting tradition that the kids adore. The three kings came to Jesus in the wee hours of the morning ( I can hear Mary thinking, “really??”) I guess there is a certain pre-dawn energy but whew! How many ornery kids will run around the next day? My friend in Cabo Rojo said they had 4am public celebrations. Like you had to get up and physically go somewhere at 4am people.  Haha. Never would fly in Wisconsin. We hunker down those long cold winter nights. (But I shouldn’t judge. I woke up at 5am last July 4th to snag good parade seats).

The morning paper

My neighbors gave our kiddos some gifts (I didn’t). And mi hija y yo attended a party at a friends house. I had to detour around some big Three Kings street parties where I heard they give out freebies to kids. That’s cool.

Somewhere along the line the kings realized that nobody cares about myrrh

or frankincense

It’s 9:37pm as I write this and there are kids running around the streets and I can hear a neighbor’s party music. Sounds like a live band.

We probably broke some sort of code since we took down our Christmas tree already, but it’s our tradition to do so on January 1st.

I do love learning about other countries’ traditions!

Por las madres  y los padres puertorriqueños

English below..

Today’s post is for my Puerto Rican friend who have never driven in snow. Driving in snow can be scary. There are a few rules to follow.

There are always morons who drive too fast and end up in the ditch. Snow is slippery.

Cuando el niño entra el carro, pídales que golpear a sus pies juntos para eliminar la nieve. when putting your kid in the car, have them click their heels together to remove the snow

chaquetas de invierno son demasiado grandes para utilizar en el asiento del coche. eliminarlos antes de usar el cinturón. winter coats are too bulky to wear in the car seat so you have to take them off before you put their seatbelt on

Oops. No puede ver nada!! You can’t see anything!

Tu necesitas limpair la luz. mucho nieve = no luz

limpie el capó del coche o la nieve soplará en el parabrisas. wipe off the hood or the snow will blow into the windshield.

encender el asiento más caliente para calentar el culo!! turn your seat or on to warm your butt

supongo que donde los carriles son porque las líneas están cubiertas por la nieve. guess where the lanes are because the lines on the road are covered up with snow

Ahora estas listos a conducir en nieve. Y también, oro a Díos. Jaja

Navidad en Puerto Rico

So, the Christmas season in Puerto Rico is longer than any I’ve experienced. Some building decorate even before Thanksgiving, and of course start selling Christmas items in October (ahem Walmart) but by and large the season begins right after Accion de Gracias. (Thanksgiving)

The mall decorates with very religious scenes. There was no live Santa there this year…but there were several nativity scenes.

Plazas really light up! And cities put up lit scenes by the streets.

Growing up in Wisconsin, the tales of snow and sleighs fit in perfectly with our winters. I asked my friend what they told Puerto Rican kids. Hardly any houses have chimneys. Santa has a magical key he uses to come in the front door!

The Three Kings are super huge here. My neighbor told me on January 6th kids put a shoebox full of grass under their beds for the camels, and the three kings being the kids gifts. This strikes me as a little odd, but I bet the kids love more gifts.  Here’s more about it: http://gopuertorico.about.com/od/eventsandholidays/ht/Christmas.htm

Also, if you want to know how to hang lights on a palm tree without stabbing it with a nail, see my solution:

Diwali party

Tonight I attended my first Diwali party! The invitation said we could dress in Indian attire if we wished. So naturally I bought the first product listed when I searched for ‘Indian shirt’ on Amazon.com. I was ready!

There are zero Indian restaurants on the west side of this island. I was so ecstatic to eat delicious, homemade Indian food I had four servings. I make no apologies.

We lit candles to Lakshmi and asked for her to take away something in our life that wasn’t aiding us any longer and bring us something we did want. Then our host put a red dot with rice on our forehead.

As with all parties we attend we found fascinating people to chat with. About everything from dinosaurs, to coast guard rescue diving, to safari’s.

Fun fun!

Hometown pride

I have a Bucky Badger UW – Madison shirt. I did not attend this university but I lived in Madison for about 12 years. I never once saw a full college sporting event though. But I own a cute Wisconsin shirt that flatters me. Sometimes I’m reluctant to wear it here. Why? I worry that I stick out enough, why should I make it even more painfully obvious that I am different than everyone else? But it is a cute shirt!  I wear it around the houses and for some errands.

I did a lot of traveling with my family when I was younger. And every time we saw other tourists wearing Wisconsin apparel (aka Packer gear) we would always talk with them briefly, share stories and ask what city each other were from. I was thought this was weird and awkward, I never liked it. But I suppose a little hometown familiarity can help people feel more comfortable when they are traveling. I travel to get away from home. I would never wear Packer or Badger apparel on a vacation. My goal is to blend in and see what it’s like to live like a local. I wore a flannel shirt one time in London and was painfully aware that nobody else was wearing a flannel! Cut me some slack it was 1999.

Me not wearing flannel in London.

Me not wearing flannel in London.

But who knows? I am who I am I take that with me everywhere. I guess I need a cute Mayaguez shirt too. I’ve never seen one though ha ha

Outdoor what?

Nevermind that the only [permanent] ice rink in the Caribbean is less than an hour away, Mayaguez [the city with no money] put up a temporary ice rink in the Plaza Colon!

Well alright then! Vamos!

We checked out the setup before they opened.  Using choppy Spanish, I spoke with one of the workers.  They are from New York. What an operation!

watching the zamboni

We went on a rainy Sunday afternoon.  Rock star parking! We weren’t sure if they would let us use our figure skates (with toe-picks and all) but they didn’t care. I will admit that we are little rule breakers. First of all, kids are supposed to be at least 5 years old. Whoops! Well, I told them my kids were twins (everyone assumes they are anyway) so lil P got in. Secondly, Trevor wasn’t supposed to be wearing shorts, but it was 80 degrees out! I think the cut us a lot of slack because we bring our own skates and kids helmets.  Probably throws them off haha

You get to skate for 20 minute sessions.  Probably because the whole gig is free (including skates) so they want to make sure people don’t have to wait too long to get on the ice.

IMG_3239

We had a blast. Trevor did a spin and people oo’d and aw’d.  We didn’t skate around with the kids in our arms, the people in Aguadilla usually yell at us even though we are very steady, so we didn’t chance it until the end when Trevor spun the kids around.  They sure do love that!

In between the tents you’re exposed to the elements, so we got a few rain drops on us.  I imagine in the sun it’ll be a little slushy there.

We’ll totally have to go back! Maybe at night to see the lights..date night?

Here’s a little video I whipped up about it:

El Cine – The Mayaguez movie theatre experience

Trevor and I have been going on a lot of movie dates this fall.

There are two theatres in town. Both are freezing! Wear pants. Maybe even a hoodie. And wear your giant wedge shoes too.

Learn to read Spanish really fast! All the movies are subtitled.

There’s at least 30 minutes of commercials and previews before the show actually starts. I personally love previews so I don’t mind.

Although I’m not sure about the message in this Sprite commercial

Tickets are cheap! Two adults for an evening show =$13.50!! Popcorn is cheap too. And the bathrooms actually have toilet paper, so that’s good.

Oh, and lastly, in EVERY show we’ve seen there’s been a baby or toddler in the crowd. Seriously. I’m waiting for Spectre to start and there’s a one year old in the last row. Who brings a toddler to James Bond??? There was one in Mockingjay pt 2 as well. Jeez!

If you take your garbage to the garbage bins at the exit when the movie is done you will be in the minority. And we are always the last ones to leave. Hey, I like reading the credits!

Policía de Mayaguez

Below is a photo I took while waiting at a red light. I was the first person waiting in the lane for the left turn arrow.  It’s a long wait. I heard rumbling coming up from behind me only to watch a cop driving up between the cars waiting at the light, swerve in front of my and stop in the crosswalk so he could turn first when the light turned green.  Then his buddy did the same. That’s not fair! (as you can see, they don’t care about all the cars/trucks running the red right in front of them either)

Crime is down though in Mayaguez! Which is good right? But a friend of ours said that the statistics aren’t really the reality. See, Puerto Rico has no money, and the police forces have cut back on overtime pay. So our friend said if a cop sees something near the end of their shift that needs police action, they are less likely to act on it.  Because there would be bringing someone in, or long paperwork, and filing of reports. If that goes over their shift, they don’t get paid for that time. So why give yourself work you won’t get paid for? Thankfully, I think Mayaguez is pretty safe overall anyway.

As debt deadline arrives for our government it will be interesting to watch what happens.  Meanwhile, the people still fill the malls and restaurants, and we can still ice skate outside.

Cumpleanos, fuego, y bomba

The gal who runs the Tres Generaciones dance group in San German had a birthday bash for her 32nd birthday last night. I was invited! I’m part of the cool crowd it seems. 😉 She instructed us to wear white. Check. While Trevor stayed home with the kiddos, I grabbed my SLR camera and headed to Lola’s Restaurant for the fiesta. I figured if I didn’t know anyone I could at least take photos. And with bomba dancing on the docket, I was excited to snap a few good shots. After all, taking dance photos is something I can rock!

As soon as I parked, a guy with a drum said, “You are the mama of D y P?” uh yeah. Apparently he is one of the music teachers at my kid’s school, and I hadn’t met him yet. He was going to play in the band for the party! The west side of this island is small, I tell ya.

edited-0002 edited-0011Zulie made a grand entrance with fire.  Now this is my kinda party! Unfortunately there was a projected boxing game on the wall, but fortunately I was able to crop it out of the photos!

She's amazing!

She’s amazing!

Bomba music is fun. Totally Puerto Rican and heavily influenced by African beats. Jeez! I miss African dancing from college! I would love to learn bomba drumming. (I was a percussionist for 9 years)  And the dancing looks fun too!!

I’ve really never seen it before.  And these kids were good. I call them kids, ’cause I’m pretty sure I’m older than most of them. The dancers took turns showcasing in front of the band. Each new dancer would do a little salute to the musicians. I just love when musicians and dancers co-create together in the moment. The energy it creates is like nothing else. Like the dancer knows the phrasing of the music and thinks, “Hey musicians, I’m gonna hit this coming up, alright? here we go, ready? BAM! We nailed it” And the musicians are like, “here’s more backatcha!” back and forth back and forth. Video doesn’t do it justice.  You have to feel it live.  I’ve felt it a lot at swing dance events.

People acted all shy when dragged out to dance but when they started dancing, they sure knew how to shake it

edited-0095 edited-0087 I found a spot to sit at a table that was clearly marked reservado, but hey, it was vacant. I had a blast taking photos. Sometimes, when you take photos of live dancing you don’t get to live in the present moment.  You’re worried too much about the technique of taking photos. But many times I put the camera down to soak up the vibe. (At least I was far enough away from the dancers to not worry about getting kicked in the face like those swing dance photos in the link above -haha)

edited-0039

He was fun. I think he could REALLY rock solo charleston 😉

edited-0051 edited-0043  edited-0067Even though I didn’t know many people, I had a blast watching.  I learned a lot. And, the other music teacher from the kid’s school was also in the band! My kids would’ve been so jealous.  They love him!

One of the drummers took a quick break to dance. His legs moved so fast they were blurry!
